On
August 12, 1914 at the Prince of Wales Armories in Edmonton, twelve men of the
Edmonton Caledonian Pipe Band, some of whom are believed to have been police
officers with the Edmonton Police Department, joined the fledgling Princess
Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). To view early photos of the band and read more early history, click here. Today’s Edmonton Police Service Pipes and Drums were formed in 1959, when members of the Service, most of whom were Scottish and Irish expatriates, expressed an interest in forming a band. Two years of practice paid off on November 9, 1961, when Chief Constable M.F.E. Anthony gave his official sanction after hearing the members play Scots Wha Hae and the band became the official band of the Edmonton Police Service. its military responsibilities, the band performs at approximately seventy- five
community events each year throughout Edmonton and Northern Alberta.
Numerous towns and cities have recognized the pipe band for giving their
hometown events that highland music touch. The police officers who comprise the
band are true ambassadors to the City of Edmonton and its Police Service. To read more and see photos of the Pipes and Drums over the last 25 years, click here.
